Who Are We?
We are employees of Catalyst Paper, Crofton Division and friends of Dave Nicholson. Dave instilled and possessed many positive values in people that he met and worked with.
Whether it was buying raffle tickets from someone whose child was fundraising for a field trip, sports team, or donating money to help out a workmate or member of the community who was dealing with a financial hardship, Dave was the guy that always led the charge.
One of Dave’s passions was fishing and we would regularly all get together out at Port Renfrew on our days off to do just that. We had a great group of guys who shared Dave’s love of the outdoors but also liked to mix in lots of laughs. We forged lots of great memories out there.
Dave passed away in October of 2000 after a courageous fight with cancer leaving behind his wife Corey and a young family consisting of 5 children whose ages ranged from 17 down to 11 months. When Dave left us, it only made sense to all of us that we head back out to ‘Renfrew to both raise a glass to our buddy and raise some money for his family by holding a fishing derby.
For three years, with the support of all the people who work at the Crofton Mill, our Suppliers and Contractors, and local businesses, we fined tuned our event to the extent that when Dave’s family had found themselves back on their feet again we decided to carry on paying tribute to our friend. We now use all the profits from our event to ensure the survival of our salmon stocks, assist the fine non-profit charities which work so hard to make our communities a better place to live, and make sure that money is not an issue for families dealing with loss of a loved one or dealing with a serious illness. We continue to grow each year and extend a warm welcome to people of all ages who wish to attend our event and join the Davey Derby Fishing Club.
