D-8 Story

This poor diver had expected a quiet day diving for crab off East Point when he was snagged by a boatload of Davey Derby Fishing Club members. Imagine his surprise when he was hoisted out of the briny and not let go until he coughed up 2 of the crab he had scooped off the bottom....This brings a whole new meaning to the term “catch and release”

No scuba divers were injured in the telling of this story, the same cannot be said for the crab.

D-7 BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD!!

The weather certainly was not in the mood to cooperate as it produced the wettest Davey Derby weekend in 7 years but that did not intimidate the 240 entrants that braved the adverse conditions and helped to raise a record breaking total of almost $16,000.00!!

I spent the entire weekend worried that we may not be as successful as usual but thanks to all of you, our streak remains intact. I can only imagine the totals if the weather had not scared off everyone else who had planned to come.

Brian Dice took home the Davey Derby trophy and bragging rights with a 39.45 pound tyee. He chose the Lowrance LCX 38c donated by all our friends at The Mortgage Center in Duncan.

Roy Ball won the halibut category with a 66 lb. flattie and can now display his Floyd Keetley Memorial Trophy on his fireplace mantle The raffles we ran helped us out and I would like to thank Al Dias and the generous people at Metal-Tech for the Ace Prawn Puller and Gary Scott at Sure Span Ready-Mix for the Vermont Castings Smoker you all saw at the main gate and our own Barry Textor for the Halibut Rod and Reel.

We will be sending out $1000.00 cheques immediately to the Victoria General Hospital’s Neo-natal Care Unit, the San Juan Salmon Enhancement Society, and to our team here at Catalyst Crofton who will be taking part in the Canadian Breast Cancer’s “Run for the cure”.

My sincere thanks go out to everyone here at the mill that helped us out. Something that has grown this big cannot be ran successfully without good people pulling together to get the job done. You all made things so much easier for me.

Special thanks go to Steve Clark, Mike Hearsay, Ted Ingham, Mike Kohse, Gregg Genis, and Mary Dice for all your valuable assistance all year long.

D-4 Story

Tom Mawson is one of the senior members of the Davey Derby Fishing Club. Tom made history of his own when he went out 1 day before our 4th Davey Derby started and bagged a 50 pound spring. Once again proving the old adage “never fish the day before a derby”. We felt bad for the ribbing he took that weekend and so we created a new prize category for him. We forget what all of the name of the category was, but it did contain the word “premature”... and... “award”.
